Troubleshooting the Hayward "IF" Code (Ignition Failure)

Hayward Heater IF error code repair, spider web blocking burner orifice reducing gas flow in Vaughan

The "IF" code is the most common emergency for Hayward owners. It means the heater attempted to ligh

Why it happens:

The "Spider Web" Factor

Early in the season, 90% of "IF" calls are caused by spider webs in the burner orifices that block the flow of gas..

  • The Vaughan Standard: We don't just "poke" the spider web with a wire to clear it. Each Hayward jet is designed for 50,000 BTUs. We unscrew and remove every individual orifice from the manifold pipe to ensure 100% clearance. Poking the web just pushes it back into the manifold, leading to incomplete combustion and "carbonic acid" that eats your heat exchanger fins.

Ignitors, Sensors, and Gas Valves

  • 1300°F Ignition: If your ignitor doesn't reach 1300°F, the gas won't light. We measure the resistance (Ohms) to ensure it hasn't aged out of range.

  • Micro-Amp  Diagnostics: We test the flame sensor’s signal (µA). If it’s weak, we clean it with fine steel wool or replace it if the ceramic base is cracked.

  • The  2021-2022 Valve Issue: Hayward had a significant "bad run" of gas valves in units manufactured in 2021-2022. We carry the redesigned  2025 gas valves in our trucks to get your pool heater back up and running quick.

Solving the Hayward "LO" Code (Limit String Open)

Solving the Hayward "LO" Limit String Open Code on a Hayward FDN H Series Heater in Mount Albert

What Does A Hayward Pool Heater Error Code LO Mean?

The "LO" code is a safety lockout. The newer Hayward Universal H-Series (FDN) has a complex safety system that requires expert navigation. This limit string includes essential parts like the water pressure switch, high-limit temperature switches, exhaust temperature limit switch, and vent air pressure switch.

Low water flow: can occur due to dirty filters, low water levels, or a clogged skimmer basket. Ensuring these are all in good condition can help resolve a ‘LO” error code.

Faulty Pressure Switch & The VSP Warning

Variable Speed Pumps (VSPs) cause significant "silent" damage.

  • The 2600 RPM Rule: We recommend a minimum of 2600 RPM for heating. Running lower (e.g., 2000 RPM) might not trip a code, but the water moves too slowly and "overheats" the heat exchanger, shortening its life.

  • The New Hayward Hardware: Hayward recently redesigned their water pressure switch to prevent this low-flow damage. The new OEM switch has a larger opening/orifice and is calibrated not to close at lower RPMs.

  • Warning: You cannot use a "Universal" or older-style pressure switch on these newer FDN models. They will not fit or calibrate correctly, potentially bypassing a critical safety feature.

The Dual Exhaust Limit & Air Pressure Logic

  • Dual Exhaust Limits: Newer FDN models now have two exhaust limit switches (one on each side). Many techs miss the second switch, leading to a "misdiagnosis." We check both.

  • AO  vs. LO: While one air pressure switch throws an "AO" code, the secondary air switch is wired into the LO string. If your vent air pressure is off, it triggers an "LO," sending most techs on a "wild goose chase" looking at water flow when the issue is actually air.

Beyond IF & LO: Other Hayward Error Codes We Resolve

While IF(Ignition Failure) and LO (Limit Open) are the most common calls, we also frequently solve these digital safety lockouts:

  • SF (Sensor Failure): This is the most common sensor code we see. It indicates that the thermistor (the water temperature sensor) is sending "out of bounds" data to the board. This is often caused by a failed sensor or, more commonly, rodent damage to the thin sensor wires inside the cabinet.
  • AC (Blower Vacuum Switch closed): A "Forced Draft" error. The board sees the air pressure switch as "closed" before the blower even starts. It’s a safety check to ensure the switch isn't bypassed or stuck.
  • AO (Blower Vacuum Switch open): The opposite of AC. The blower is running, but the switch isn't "seeing" enough vacuum to ignite the burners. This often points to a bird's nest in the exhaust or a soot-clogged heat exchanger.
  • EE (EEPROM Error): While rare compared to SF, this code specifically points to a "Bad Board" or a data error within the ignition control circuit.
  • bD (Gas Valve/Board Data Failure): A  serious internal fault. This often triggers when the "Steam Sauna" effect from a leak creates moisture that shorts out the communication between the gas valve and the control board.
  • IO (Ignitor Open): A direct electrical fault with the Silicon Nitride Ignitor. These parts often develop microcracks due to age or the acidic condensation caused by a leaking heat exchanger.

The Vaughan Pool Heater Experts® Standard: We don't just "reset" these codes. We use our diagnostic tools to find the root cause—whether it's a spider web, a cracked vacuum tube, or moisture damage—to ensure your heater is safe and reliable for the season.
